Make-up, Apples & Old Things

At the bottom of a make-up bag, there’s always ancient things I haven’t used in ages. Creams, masques, lipsticks and such have shelf life. If I can’t remember when I bought it or last used it, then in the trash it goes.

My recent thrift store find is a lovely apple peeler gadget. Dutch apple pie is on my mind. I also want to freeze chopped apples to use instead of applesauce.

I’ve had that paint scraper tool since early 1990s. I have others in various sizes. That one has an old friend vibe.

Clearing out things brings with it a lot of memories.

What is your oldest go to gadget?

  1. I have so many old gadgets I can't even remember. Some of my paint brushes date back to my first acrylic set when I was a teen!

  2. I have never owned a makeup bag - does that make me in the extreme minority I wonder. My makeup consists of a little eyebrow pencil. I used to wear mascara until I developed swollen eyes from allergies and that was it. I don't wear scent either because so many people are allergic to it these days.
We have that same apple peeler only in green. The RC uses it quite regularly.
Oldest gadget - I had to ponder that for a bit and all I can come up with is a piece of 1/4" dowel with a broken end that I have used for donkey's years when I'm pushing stuffing into anything. It's worn smooth from all the use its had and is perfect for what I use it for. Another piece of dowel just wouldn't be the same.

    1. Maryanne,
No make-up bag, I think, is probably the norm.
Old gadgets that make it through the years are little miracles.

  3. Probably my one serving coffee filter. It's old and stained, but it does the trick and makes a good cup of coffee. I've been looking around for others, but one I found was marble and heavy. I'll stick with my old one. ; )

  4. I have a couple of older kitchen gadgets that were "rescued" from my late mother's home when we were clearing things. One is a metal jar opener and other is a ravioli crimper. I use the jar opener all the time, but have yet to use the crimper.

    1. Beatrice,
You are a keeper of kitchen history!
I was in shock to see a cup in mother’s flour bin is one we had when I was in first grade.

  5. I have a very old pencil sharpener, all metal. It's similar to the kind they used to put into schools, and is intended to mount to a table, but we just use it loose. It makes a terrible noise but sharpens pencils better than any other sharpener.
I've been peeling apples by hand and it's a tedious job. A peeler like your would be so much better.
Going through the makeup bag and throwing away old things is something I try to keep on top of.

    1. Lorrie,
The old Boston pencil sharpeners?. Is that the brand of yours?
Using a peeler will make your day. I highly recommend using one.
