An idea drifted by this afternoon about how to make the holidays feel cheery-ish instead of sad.
Decorations.
A themed holiday may be a distraction that creates a sense of control. The project can get one out and about purposely searching for things. Surrounded by one’s accomplishments can be uplifting.
What if you aren’t into decorating because it reminds you of happier times? Themed holiday decor can replace old reminders with the new one of you making the effort to feeling good.
First, decide on a style, traditional, one color, plaid, rustic, shiny, nature, steampunk, old West, modern, beaded fruit, candy canes, Santas, musical and so on.
Second, set a budget and source materials
Lastly, have fun decorating!

We are buying some new decorations this year, just to spruce things up a bit.
ReplyDeleteMarie,
DeleteThat’s wonderful! New decorations are a dream shopping trip.

Decorating will not happen here until after Thanksgiving so I am a traditionalist in that respect. We bought a couple of new holiday ornaments on recent trips but nothing more beyond those. But, I did buy a couple of snowmen at a recent church sale.
ReplyDeleteBeatrice,
DeleteHoliday sales are great places to buy unique ornaments.
After Thanksgiving decorating is a tradition I don’t want to give up.

Many people go with themes for decorating. I think it's a good idea. I have little spaces of this and that when I decorate, the frosty people, the snow globes, the elves, etc. Makes it fun to collect these things when we see them out shopping.
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful season, and everyone seems to be a little more kinder. : )

Sheri,
DeleteHaving spaces for different things is a good idea.
Those huge ornaments in New York City this year are theme inspirational.

I've never been a huge fan of themed decorations and far prefer the mish-mash of 'stuff' that tells a family story. If I had a bigger house I might be tempted to have a 'theme' in the living room but the other rooms would be family-oriented.
ReplyDeleteMaryanne,
DeleteMish-mash has a good happy vibe. Your idea for the living room being themed is interesting. The link to that felt garland on your blog is a neat start for creating a theme.
