What Have You Noticed?

Out shopping recently, two things caught my attention.

Old news update. The size of soup cans has become even smaller. They are hideously small. I’m not going to name brands. Product smaller volumes at the same price or higher is called shrinkflation. I believe if cans are made smaller, then more folks might start making soup from scratch.

Christmas ornaments at the local Dollar General store this year don’t appear to be as plentiful and varied as last year. There’s plenty of gift wrap paper and gift bags though. I’m thinking importing cheaper ornaments from overseas might be the problem.

I bought one can of soup and the last 4 bottle brush tree ornaments. As a kid, bottle brush trees fascinated me.

What changes have you noticed lately?

  1. Shrinkflation is a thing. I rarely use can soup, except an occasional can of tomato. I have been using more fresh tomatoes though.

      Marie,
That is a good decision to use fresh tomatoes. Canned tomatoes have too much salt. I was surprised how easy it is to make a spaghetti sauce on the stove using fresh tomatoes.

  2. I have a Dollar General up here, and I browse through it at least every couple weeks. They always have the most delightful holiday stuff. There was a section of pretty star candles and pinkish things this year. I went back to get a candle, and they were all gone. Love that store! ; )

  3. I've certainly noticed can shrinkage - tuna being one example. It's even more annoying when you need it for a recipe and end up having to use two cans to get what you need. Definitely no savings that way - and even worse when the price has gone up on top of the shrinkage. Can't speak to the Christmas ornament question because I haven't bothered to look. We don't need any more than what we already have so I generally avoid that section of the store.
