Mulling over thoughts of summer heat

Summer Fields

As weird as it may sound, since a kid, I’ve liked hot summers. Heat waves, however, I am not a fan.

Hot ambient temperatures signal my brain that it is warm enough to be outdoors, be in nature, wear sandals, picnic time and know the scent of fresh air after a thunderstorm. There are wonderful elements of hot weather.

And, Air conditioning is number one. Relief from the heat is needed for safe healthy living.

After that, when the sun doesn’t sting my thin elderly skin, it is therapeutic to me that sunshine rules the day. Feeling the heat from the sun, for a brief time with a thick layer of sunscreen on, is a connection to the universe, a science fiction moment, being one with the solar system.

This summer I have pondered not having an air conditioner. So far, fans are cool enough. But, one day returning home, when I opened my front door, I felt a rush of hot air. Thoughts began fading from oh this summer will be cooler, no A/C needed. Yes, I do need air conditioning took over

  1. As a kid the hot summers were great. Even in my just younger days. Now, I live in a place that is NEVER hot. I miss a nice hot day.

    1. Nicole,
We were wired as kids to appreciate a hot summer day.

  2. Beautiful photos! I am not a fan of extreme heat and heat waves. And here in Montreal, Canada, (sadly) we get them every summer. However, "supposedly" it is going to be different this summer, more comfortable.
I am really hoping for this. Thank you so much for sharing.

    1. Linda,
I heard a warm and muggy forecast for our area this summer.
Whatever we get, A/C will be nice.

  3. I've always been a fan of hot summer days although I can't be out in the sun without breaking out into a heat rash. I love the heat, but not the humidity and for that a/c is a good option. I'd be happy with lots of fans but the RC really feels the heat so we have a portable a/c in our living room so he's more comfortable. My sewing room has just a ceiling fan and a tower fan and I'm usually quite comfortable.

    1. Maryanne,
Being in the sun has limits for sure. Even afterwards in the shade, a person can experience sun sickness.
That surprised me that hours later I would become ill if I had been in the sun too long.
      Stay cool!

  4. I like hot summers too. And I have never had air/con except when I lived in an apartment. And I never miss it. There are maybe five days out of every summer where I say "If I had it, I would use it" but a fan is usually fine and if worse comes to worst, I go for a drive. Even at tday's prices, it is less expensive (and more fun!) than adding the purchase of an a/c unit and increased power bills to my life! Of course, I live in Michigan where it is sometimes humid but not unbearable. If I lived in the south, I'd be first in line!

    1. Jeanie,
Good point, living in the South requires an air conditioner. Folks there, though, will still do without one.
Living in Texas, I had to have an air cooler.

  5. We don't have AC but we do have fans. I know what you mean about being a kid and loving the heat. It just seemed like a normal part of life. Kind of like Koolaid and popsicles!

    1. Debra,
Yes to Koolaid and popsicles! As kids, they were the air conditioner.
I don’t remember growing up, anyone have A/C. The first was maybe early 1970s a family member had one for allergy issues.
My apartment, south facing, heats up to over 80°F at night. I had to take cool showers to deal with the heat the summer I didn’t have A/C.

    1. Sheri,
The temperatures here vary from cooler to hotter, rain to no rain.
So far, the days have been nice.
      Wishing you a great summer!
