Reflection Monday August 2018

I was 18 years when on a Sunday morning reading the Boston Globe's magazine section, I read about Tinnitus. The shock was numbing. Until then, I thought the ringing in my ears is the sound of silence. None of the hearing tests I had as a child resulted in a diagnosis. How would I tell anyone what I don't know is there?
When a rock hits you in the head, ( I have scars), the ping-ring sound is what I hear constantly in both ears. There are times when it is louder than usual, like when I take aspirin. Thankfully, louder doesn't happen that often.
Shocking discoveries in our lives can create a bend in our reality. I was over 50 years when I discovered in an art class I'm dyslexic. As a child, I blended the world with what I have, learned to get on with it; and with the help of extra reading classes in phonetics to catch up in second grade, I smooth over the dyslexia. Now as I age, I wonder what else will there be.

We can't ponder a thing we don't know exists.
The sound of our silence, isn't always silent.
Reflect on what you are hearing from your life.

  1. Well, darlin' here's another pal that has tinnitus. I've had it about 40 years in both ears. You're right-sometimes it gets very loud. It's funny-but if there are no other noises, I can still hear peepers, crickets, and tiny noises-but if there's any other noise around, I can't. Trying to hear people talk to me in a crowed room is a nightmare. I just smile and nod-seems to work. I get so used to the ringing sometimes I don't even hear it. My mind just tunes it out for me-a real blessing.

    1. Hi Debra,
I hear most everything except for bad sound on the TV. There are shows where the people speaking chew their words, and some movies where the sound is so bad, its not worth watching. Crowded rooms are uncomfortable for me as well. Tuning it out is the rule.
I watch TV commercials about people being miserable with the ringing. I think if a person develops it at an older age, then that might be the reason it makes them miserable. Having tinnitus since a very young child, its a part of me like blinking. So I don't get the misery issue.

  2. Wise words. That flower is gorgeous and even more so with the bee on it.

    1. Hi Loree,
This year bumble bees have been visiting less. I think the heat and lack of big flowers keeps them away.

  3. Oh geez, I have suffered from tinnitus for as long as I can remember. I wasn't hearing it so much this morning until you mentioned it and now it is blasting in my left ear. Whatever causes it has effected how much I hear in that ear. I tell Terry all the time that I can't hear him if I am laying on my right ear. I never gave a thought that the tinnitus might be why.
    xx, Carol

    1. Hi Carol,
Learning to live with it makes it unnoticed more than noticed.

  4. Years ago I had a bout with vertigo that lasted for weeks. The doctor had me check in with an ear specialist for a check up- and said that if it happened again to just come in and get medication for it instead of letting it run its course.

The ear specialist ran tests and told me that my hearing range was both higher and lower than the normal human range. I used to wonder why it was people said you couldn't hear the sound of a dog whistle, because I can.

    1. Hi William,
Wow, that's neat to have such special hearing. Vertigo...doctor told me inner ear when seasonal allergies stuffed up sysyem.

  5. My husband got/developed tinnitus about 10 years ago. It bothered him until his hearing deteriorated (skil saws without ear protection will do it) and he got hearing aids. Now the tinnitus is mostly blocked.
Once in awhile my ears ring and I empathize with those of you with tinnitus.

Learning from life is an attitude, isn't it? I like to think I do learn, and hope that I am not being obtuse about what life is telling me.
