Identifying Geographical Features
April Morning Rt 125, acrylic in progress |
Finding the name of the mountains in the painting above is a challenge without location notes. A topographical map is a map solution.
The painting has 3 peaks. I can do a topographical sketch that illustrates what is there. Matching my rough sketch to a topographical map of the area will help identify the names of the peaks that have names.
Problem. Searching maps online is a hassle. One website moves the page with the least movement of the mouse. Other websites want a download, are slow, have no labels, no roads or are too awkward to bother with.
The only way for me to be sure what mountain they are is to drive the route in the spring. I'm guessing, it might be near Middlebury Gap with Burnt Hill center and Kirby Peak left. The information source is my 1985 Vermont Road Atlas by Northern Cartographic, Burlington, Vermont.

ReplyDeleteLove your recent haiku
I love your painting-and pretty cool that you can read a topographic map
ReplyDeleteIt's hard for me to put into words how inspired I feel by this post, May, but I hope you find the mountain come spring. Sounds like a fun road trip. The painting is lovely.
ReplyDeleteTake care, SPS.
ReplyDeleteThat is a good work.
ReplyDeleteKathy,
ReplyDeleteTopographic maps are easier than they look. Steep terrain is the close lines, and flat land contour lines are farther apart measuring elevations.
Becki,
Looking forward to spring for sure. In winter, that route is scary to me.
Have a wonderful warm and cozy week-end, Marie
Thank you, William
I hope the snow stopped there.
An upcoming spring drive to check out where the mountains in your painting are sounds very nice.
ReplyDeleteI do like this acrylic in progress!! Can't wait to check out a few more of your posts.
Thanks for visiting my page and the kind comment.

Hello and welcome, Mary
ReplyDeleteI found your delightful blog when blog surfing.
I like topo maps-I loved earth science in school! Your painting is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debra
ReplyDeleteSame here, loved Earth Science.
It best my best subject.
Your painting is beautiful. That's an interesting dilemma, searching online. Seeing your neck warmer note reminds me I have one I haven't pulled out. Must do!
ReplyDeleteJeanie,
ReplyDeleteInstead of a neck warmer, wearing a scarf around the house can give you a feeling of being an old bookseller.
