The Cold

Winter 2023

 -3°F (-19.44°C), 3 February 2023
Along Route 7, Addison County Vermont, that was the ambient temperature on my vehicle's thermometer.
The wind chill I'm guessing
 was around -20°F.

Serious freezing cold!

Please, be careful outdoors.
 Bundle up!
Scarf. Thick Gloves. Hat.
sweater. Thermal underwear.
Thick Winter Coat and Boots.
Also note,
metal freezes fast,
as in piercings might need
extra protection.

A quick walk back and forth
maybe a hundred yard total,
one of my hands was bare,
one had on a thick fleece glove.
The inch plus top of my fingers,
including thumb were freezing!
Tingling discomfort cold.
My thumb ached as it
took the longest to warm up.
In that short time,
for that short distance,
I believe frost nip,
the before frost bite stage,
was beinning in my fingers.
I was told the elderly
feel the cold faster.
I say, real faster!

I have been out in serious cold before.
Yesterday was the coldest.
Today, the wind chill is even worse.

Please Protect yourself & pets!

  2. We have single digits this morning, wind chill way down. I didn't even go go the mailbox yesterday, 150 yard round trip!

  3. We're about the same. I'm staying in. Rick is out skiing today. I hope he returns without frostbite!

  4. It's much the same here in NH with bitter cold temps that might be slightly warmer than in VT. That said, temps in the minus teens overnight and the single digits in the daytime are downright cold. I know what you mean about the fingers and thumb tingling, the same happens to me even when gloves are worn. And, yes, the wind chill was the worst.

  5. Kathy,
    Glad the ice is gone!
I prayed you wouldn't have to crawl up the hill to your mailbox.
Not much wind here today. It feels warmer than yesterday despite lower temperatures.

  6. Liz,
Going out in that cold yesterday was brutal. I am glad you stayed indoors.

  7. Jeanie,
I hope Rick is safe as well.
Although I might want his mind examined skiing when temperatures are so low. Some ski places here in Vermont closed because of the cold.

  8. Beatrice,
I hope your birthday celebrations were fun.
Have you tried silk glove liners? Silk adds warmth.
Old silk blouses, I keep for weather like this if I have to go out to clean off vehicle. Now that I know elderly fingers freeze faster, I will be buying silk liners.
    Stay warm!

  9. It’s exceptionally cold here too. I am not as brave as you. I’ll be indoors until this is over.

  10. I have a blog friend who has minus 40 degree temps right now, part of it is from the winds. You are experiencing very cold temps too. Please bundle up and try to stay warm. We are in the 20's here, and that's cold for me. I have to give your credit for taking a quick walk in this cold, even for a short distance. I am still loving your Wintery side bars. They really are lovely.

  11. Marie,
    Home sounds good.
I doubt if I go out until next week.

  12. Thank you, Sheri
The sidebars remind me of summer flowers.
A 20°F would feel like spring around here. Next week will be warmer.

  13. We have had some cold days (Brrr) but at the moment I'm pleased to say it's warmed up a little.
February can often bring bad storms, so we will see what the next few weeks bring.

    Keep safe and warm

    All the best Jan

  14. We've been hearing about the intense cold in parts east of us. Staying covered up and warm is so important. Staying home is best, if possible.

  15. Jan,
You are right about February. In 2007, 1978, 2003, 2010, there were blizzard in America.

  16. Lorrie,
It is 21°F (-6°C) this morning. Quite an increase from yesterday.
The wind chill temperatures were the worse cold I've experienced.
    Stay warm and dry

  17. I layer up in these cold temps.

I have arthritis in my left knee from an accident years ago. I only really have problems with it on very cold days.

  18. Prayers your knee hurts less, William

Layers are a smart way to dress for cold weather. I will go up to 3 or 4 before I out my coat on.
