A Summer Excursion: New York City

At Seaside, c. 1892 oil
William Merritt Chase

The painting is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

There is an Amtrak train service for Vermont to New York City on the Ethan Allen Express. For the 7.5 hour (one way) trip, departures don't accommodate a day trip (the last time I looked). It would be an overnight stay and return the next day. Taking in a Broadway show, and a museum tour would be a wonderful small summer excursion.

Using the Amtrak website is a bit of a hassle for me.  The schedule doesn't include ticket prices. A ticket price search shows me cost that includes a confusing bus transfer. I'd call a travel agent.

  1. That's a pretty pricey trip, but sounds great.

One thing I've learned with art museum going to see a specific artwork, is to check if it's going to be on display when you want to visit. They lend out works and rotate artworks in and out of storage, so it's good to know.

  2. Travel agents are often worth their weight in gold. I'd love to go on a train trip. One of my dreams has been to take the train across Canada but pricing the tickets certainly brings that particular dream to a screeching halt, particularly when it would be coupled with having to get home again. We would have to win the lottery big time in order to afford any of it.

    That is great advice.
I'd be in tears on the floor if I travel to see a painting that wssn't there.

  6. William,
There is pricing there when you search for it.
An easy to find schedule with times and ticket prices listed is what I didn't find.

  8. Marie,
New York City vibe is unique.
I haven't been there since 1968. Stayed with a friend there a short few weeks one summer. Apartment hunted on West 63rd Street. Lunches in Central Park. A trip back is in dream about it stage.

  9. I like William Merritt Chase and that's a great painting. Oh, wouldn't it be fun to train to the Big apple? I'd love that. I hope you can work something out.

  10. Jeanie,
Such a trip would be nice in a group. The schedules are so complicated, a travel agent would be best.

  12. Sheri,
NYC is a few hours away, but I will not drive there, event to save money. The train trip is 7.5 hours or longer. A dream trip with snags.
