Petunias, Exercise & Excursions

A petunia stem broke off. I stuck the little flower in an empty container of dirt and forgot about it.

A few days later, the flower is still blooming. It has continued to flower one after another for almost 3 weeks. I didn't know petunias will root and grow like that.

Today is half a day of summer. Half a day of thunderstorms with rain. I keep reminding myself there isn't a drought. (Ooo, that was loud!)

After week one on the exercise bike, I ache without ibuprofen. I'll adjust the handle bars lower in the hopes the muscle pain decreases. I'm also going to every other day with a stretching routine in between.

On the down slope of peak summer, my hopes are on August being wonderful.

Petunias & Torenia

My tiny garden has a huge planter next to it acting as a nursery for plants that will go in the ground elsewhere. As it turns out, the  plants that are there look too nice to move.

Torenia flowers fit well under the petunias still in the plastic planter.

The small purple petunias are the type with white patches, In the shade the white grow better. In the sun, the flowers are all purple.

Next week is my excursion time,  a simple walk downtown to a Vermont state park for a picnic lunch and plein air painting. Matching it with a home project, the dinning table sanding will be next week as well. It will be a challenge to get outdoors, but outdoors I must go. Wherever anxiety is the lowest will determine the destination.

How are your summer excursions going?

  2. The rain is making your plants grow nicely. The petunia is very pretty, and do you know that's my favorite color! That's great that you are using the exercise bike. Sorry the muscles ache - that is expected when starting a new routine. Your walk and picnic lunch to the park sounds lovely. I wish I had a nearby park to walk to here. ; )

  4. Sheri,
I wish we had a nearby park that's open and safe to walk like the kind of public parks like the Burlington VT area.
The petunias are a true solid purple, a very classy color.

  5. Your excursion with a picnic sounds delightful! We have stayed close to home because of the heat and humidity.

  6. Marie,
Close to home is a wise decision.
Here in Vermont I don't watch local news often. I wish I'd hear the term wet bulb more often instead of just just humidity reading so folks can get use to alerting to the dangers of a high wet bulb temperature.
I knew when I lived in Texas, when I heard wet bulb mentioned, there is a dangerous weather condition, no fooling around, no pressing your luck, whoa city.

  7. I have a purple petunia that is doing nothing because of the rain.i just repotted it and moved it in hopes it does a little better. We are going into high humidity just the worst weather that spawns all kinds of bad weather. We had a bit of a thunder storm last night but nothing bad. I am praying for better weather in August and a very long fall. Enjoy your outing.
    Happy painting

  8. Cathy,
I hope your weather gets better for your flowers to bloom.
All the rain is dampening summer fun for everyone but the ducks.

  9. I've never had much luck growing petunias. For me they get all leggy, despite my trying to keep them pinched back. They bloom for a week or so and then it's all green. Finally gave up on them. Fushias, on the other hand, bloom their little hearts out all summer long with nothing but watering and a little bit of fertilizer once a week.
I'm really hoping that August will stay warm and we won't get an early fall. After a very late start to summer I certainly haven't had enough of it yet!

I agree! August has to be summery.

Fuchsias I haven't tried. It use to be popular around here years ago. Then petunias took over, more color variety than I thought possible. I thought they life sun, but mind do better in part shade. Impatiens are doing really well.

  11. Petunias are a nice flower ...
Our weather has turned rainy which isn't a bad thing but means we have not ventured out as much as usual.

Can't believe we will be in August next week, the year is flying by!

    All the best Jan

The year is flying by, and summer feels like the fastest part.

  13. Today we had smashing raindrops as I drove Wiggy, the pup, to the wet. I can't believe how quickly summer is going. Whoosh. Started a new day job though. Make summer go even quicker. Whoosh. Whoosh. Whoosh. Cheers, Ivy.
