Selecting a Holiday Theme
Blueberries |
My holiday cards will be in the mail shortly after I decide what this year's motif will be. Leaning towards clean, fresh and healthy, blueberries touch my heart for a fun card design.
I mean, how many Christmas or holiday cards do you see where blueberries are the star of the show?
Berries, pinecones, branches and acorns are my favorite elements for motif design. Remember the dinner plate design I want to create?
William-Sonoma has a similar (pricey) dinnerware design. I just love.

I make a list of things and styles I like. I draw a few sketchs. Then, I chose a font to hang on the most appealing images. Finally, I decide on the one to develop.
I prefer to use a graph paper pad to sketch designs because sizing the card is easier with grids to count out. I then use scraps of watercolor paper to make test cards that are good for changing things around if need be.
Do you select a holiday theme each year?
I think that's wonderful that you send out Christmas cards. I really miss doing that. When I moved up here, there was no copy places, as I liked to add a picture, so I just started sending my Christmas cards through e-mail. I must get back to the old fashioned way. It's very creative how you do it, and homemade cards are simply the best. Great idea with the blueberries.

I haven’t sent Christmas cards for a few years now. I miss them. Such a great idea to make your cards. Such a lovely gift!
ReplyDeleteDebbie,
ReplyDeleteI hope you make a few holiday cards this year. It can be a lot of fun.
I send out cards each year. Sometimes I make them, but lately I've been purchasing them. It's good to have options.
ReplyDeleteCarol,
ReplyDeleteThere are store cleak and such people that we chat with along the out and abouts. Building a card list can be ongoing.
Marie,
ReplyDeleteI hope you make a few cards to mail as well.
There's something about using scissors and glue that feels refreshing.
Lorrie,
ReplyDeleteI do both make and buy ready made holiday cards. The cards I make go to family and friends.
First, love the music in the post that follows this one!
ReplyDeleteI don't really think of a theme (I figure Christmas is a big enough theme to work with). We do two kinds of cards -- a "family printed" card with photos of the kids and grands and a written update. Vistaprint has wonderful templates. That tends to go to relatives, friends fro afar, that sort of thing. Then I do about 15 or so individual art cards, generally watercolor. They are usually pretty simple because after the art sale I'm plum tuckered out and don't have a lot of time to get them done. (Sometimes I'll dip into my leftover inventory!). Last year it was hats, scarves and mittens. This year I think it might be ornament balls. We'll see!
Jeanie,
ReplyDeleteYour holiday card schedule sounds perfect. The family update letters are a real treasure because they create such a personal connection.
Have a wonderful weekend
That will definitely ne a different Christmas card for sure. Janice
ReplyDeleteJanice,
ReplyDeleteThere are so many card designs in the world, it isn't easy to create one that's different. Even different, there's probably a few out there that are similar. Fun making homemade cards is a holiday treat like cookies you can mail.
