Thinking on a Saturday Morning in January With No Cheese in the Fridge
Vintage Glass Ceiling Shade |
I'm sitting here with now cold coffee, barely getting my sense of taste and smell back, thinking about what it is going to take for me to cook breakfast. What does a person do without toast at the first meal of the day? Then I think about the people suffering with starvation having no bread at all any day. Well, if they were here, then they would miss having toasts as well.
This is what is going to happen. I will make latkes with shredded red potato and zucchini. I can't deal with onion at the moment. I am confident that I will cook because I am that hungry. Cereal is not going to cut it this late in the morning. Besides, I'm in need of some greasy and crisp food I can have with ketchup. No doubt there will be a latke photo added later.
Until then, clearing out a cabinet to organize it efficiently, I found a few things from days gone by. There was a time when I was near obessessed with vintage lamps, especially ceiling fixtures. I thought they make nice hanging candle holders. What the one in the photo above did make, is to fill a nice space in the donation box I dropped off at a thrift store yesterday.

Hello,
ReplyDeleteYour Latke looks delicious, thanks for sharing the recipe.
It feels good to get more organized, downsize and donate to the thrift store.
Take care, have a great weekend.
Eileen,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading you blog today.
I will miss the gallon sized milk glass vase I donated. In all the years I had it, I used it once. It is so large, it overwhelms my small apartment. I hope it finds a new home with high ceilings.
Your Latke looks delicious. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteLatke look yummy ~ hope you enjoyed it ~ hugs,

That sounds totally grim. Is there anyone you can call to pick up some groceries that might help? I hope so. Latkes -- you have more energy than I would have. I hope you are well soon!
ReplyDeleteI’ve never thought of latkes for breakfast. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteA good weekend to you Bill
ReplyDeleteWe are expecting a heavy snowfall. Fun times.
Carol,
ReplyDeleteThe latkes turned out good.
I'm surprised because is has been a while since I made the. I think the corn oil, that doesn't smoke like olive oil, is the best way to go.
Hugs!
Jeanie,
ReplyDeleteI have food, but didn't have much energy to cook it.
I was forced to cook by hunger. :)
Latkes are actually easy to make. Its the shredding by hand that's boring.
Marie,
ReplyDeleteLatkes are good with scrambled eggs, like a fancy hashbrown.
The latkes look fabulous. It's snowing in New York and I'm going to do crockpot cooking in the morning. I think I'll start the morning with coffee and French toast, but now I've got latkes stuck in my mind.
ReplyDeleteButtercup,
ReplyDeleteFrench toast sounds wonderful for a snowy morning.
Here in Vermont, the snow is falling lightly so far.
Stay warm!
Oh, my dear:
ReplyDeleteFirst, your latkes look tasty! I wish I were there. I'd bake up a loaf or two of bread for you, and then make a lovely egg bake for you to enjoy. I hope you feel back to your healthy self soon.
Big hugs,
Donna
Your latkes look delicious. An empty fridge and pantry force one to be creative!
ReplyDeleteDonna,
ReplyDeleteFresh baked bread sound devine!
I miss restaurants that bring fresh bread to the table. Everyone was always keen on the bread more than the food. lol
Lorrie,
ReplyDeleteThankfully, I have food in the pantry. I just didn't have the energy to cook. I wanted an easy meal. The easiest and best was the latkes. I couldn't face plain scrambled eggs or oatmeal.
With snow on the ground tonight and into the day, I think oatmeal will be the best meal because I have to go out to move the car for the snow plow. lol
No cheese? I can't imagine that because it's a definite staple in our house and I know if there wasn't any to be had I would immediately be craving it. I think, if Resident Chef wasn't doing the cooking, I would mostly live on grilled cheese sandwiches.
ReplyDeleteMaryann,
ReplyDeleteBig grilled cheese fan here as well.
I cut down after some folks told me their cardio diet folks say no to the grilled cheese because of too much fat. I think a cheese sandwich on toast left in oven to melt the cheese is healthier than butter in fry pan.
Mmm, the latke looks yummy. My husband has made placki a few times. I think it's similar.. shredded potato, s&p, egg, flour.
