Toast
Vintage Toast Rack E.P.N.S. |
Guessing here, my first piece of toast might have been when I was a toddler. There is a photo of me with a lollipop when I was 3 years. It makes sense to me that I could handle a piece of toast on my own, as in held toast.
A toaster, guessing again, was iffy when I was a kid. I remember the (scary) type with the two sides that you pull down. Watching adults not burning toast in those days, looked to me as skill to learn. I also recall toast being made in a black frying pan. In the 1950s, the round 2 slice marshmallow shiny toaster doubled as a mirror to comb my hair before school.
There are sandwiches that are the best when the bread is toasted, tuna fish or egg salad, for example. When I feel poorly, cinnamon toast rules (cinnamon sugar sprinkled on buttered toast). Oh! A hot dog on a toasted bun raises it to the fancy food level. Up late at night, toast and tea are my comfort snack. If running late for an appointment, grabbing a piece of toast is the meal on the run.
How does toast fit into your life?

Wordle on 2 today!
#5 in my life time
Thrilled I be!
Now that I don't eat as many carbs, I eat less toast but I've always loved it, especially with good homemade bread. But I don't remember my earliest toast! Well done on Wordle! I did two yesterday, three today. My average is four.
ReplyDeleteIn our first Wisconsin rental we had one of those toasters where you opened both sides to flip the toast. And guess when it was done, before it started smoking.
ReplyDeleteJeanie,
ReplyDeleteGood Wordling!
Yesterday was a 5 for me. After a 2, I try harder to see if I can get my average above 4.
Liz,
ReplyDeleteThat is funny!
I remember the smoke as well. lol
After a while, after scraping the black off the toast, I got use to the burned campfire flavor.
I remember those two-sided flip-down toasters too and the clouds of smoke I always managed to create when I tried to use it. Pop up toasters were a great invention. Toast is a go-to for us too and there's rarely a day goes by that we don't have it at least once. I love raisin bread toasted - yum!
ReplyDeleteps - good for you on the Wordle score! I generally average 4 tries but did get it in one once.
ReplyDeleteI don’t eat toast any more. But I did back in the day. Loved it!
ReplyDeleteMaryanne,
ReplyDeletePop up toasters are a good invention. Raisin bread toast is a favorite as well.
Wordle on one! Congratulations!
Marie,
ReplyDeleteCutting down on bread isn't easy.
I've been trying for months. So far I'm down to every other week.
i also like cinnamon toast, it's so simple, yet so good!! i like tuna and egg salad on fresh white bread, the kind where your fingers leave impressions in it. after a few days, then i toast it. when your starving, it's a quick go to food!!
ReplyDeleteMy grandmothers used their frying pans to cook toast. We sure have come a long way from then. Janice
ReplyDeleteI grew with toast at home, but learning about celiac-no gluten we haven't made toast in years-I keep a toaster around when out of state friends stay over for a long weekend.
ReplyDeleteI do love the vintage toaster you found a photo of
Kathy,
ReplyDeleteThe photo is of a toast rack. I changed the photo caption from holder to rack. It goes on the table with the slices of toast in the slots. It is used mostly in the UK since the 18th Century.
Janice,
ReplyDeleteFry pan toast is a skill for sure.
I do my grilled cheese that way, toast bread in butter, add cheese, bake in oven until melted.
That is a neat vintage toast rack. I love a good piece of toast. And my mom made us cinnamon toast as well. I then made it for my kids growing up. Now, I would like to have some, but I'll have to get sugar at the store. ; )

Sheri,
ReplyDeleteThere was a time when a shaker of cinnamon sugar was always around. I have garlic toast more than cinnamon.
Carol,
ReplyDeleteEating for nutrition is pretty much what I'm left with after a few years ago a meeting with a nutrionist. Hugs
