Thoughts About Keeping It Simple

I had a thought yesterday about what I was going to post. After deciding on a post title, I search the Internet to make sure the words aren't being used in some way. Nowadays, with so many millions of people online, it is very difficult to find a genuine title you create that isn't in some way of wording, being used already by someone else.

Thus, the title I chose was tossed because it is the name is too close to a television series title, The Edge of Everything (HBO).

Anyway, the thought is about how being on the edge of an idea or on the verge of something, I feel that we can get lost in adding too much detail. Keeping it simple isn't as simple as it should be. Nobody, methinks, likes forgetting something important. The plan should be thorough, the best it can be.

Is there a trick to keeping it simple?

If minimilism is the theme, then simple is easy.

If not, then struggle city we go.

For down sizing aka simplifying life, I decided to only keep the books that fit on my bookshelf, the pans I cook with, the dishes I use, and, the clothes I like that I actually wear. I wish myself a lot of luck getting that done.

  1. After retiring, selling our house and all our possesions Barb and I moved into an RV and traveled for several years. Since we have limited room, we had the adage : something in, something out. Meaning if you bought a shirts, pair of shoes or a pot/pan, one had to leave the trailer.
We have not carried the same thought into our house as well as being semi-minimalistic keeping house simple in the house.

  2. That edge of something, on the verge, is limerence! I wonder if you'll manage your winnowing goal? It's ambitious, but why not.

    1. Liz,
Thank you for the new word. I looked it up. Scary excess infactuation condition.

I'll know in a few days how successful I am. I have a banana box to fill with books.

  4. I'm trying to do that a bit -- but I know it's going to take a long time. Especially with the books!

      True about the books.
      It is fun though.

  5. Living simply comes natural to me, and it's really the only way that I choose to be. It's a good idea to only keep the pans you cook with and the clothes you often wear. Anything else, can add to the clutter. Books are hard to part with, but with all the moves, I had to downsize, and donated many books. You're doing a fantastic job with the downsizing. It's not easy, but you're going through it all and choosing what you want to keep and what you don't.

    1. Sheri,
You are fortunate to be naturally living a simply lifestyle.

I wish books were as easy as dishes to pack up and donate. I expect a success donating lots of books this week.

  6. I think you're on the right track with your plan to keep only what you actually use. I really wish I could do that with all the 'stuff' in my sewing room!

    1. Maryanne,
Sewing rooms don't factor in unless the door is blocked. As long as there is a path to the machine,
      the place is golden. :)

    2. I love this response! So glad that sewing rooms don't count because I'm working on organizing mine this week and it's hard to get rid of useful stuff!

    1. Marie,
This is a perfect time of year to do a deep down sizing.

Last winter, I didn't get out all my winter coats and hats. It was no a winter boots winter.

  8. I decluttered to the point that I think I'm done for awhile. I still have lots of stuff but it was getting too hard to get rid of things and I think I can keep what I have tidy and that's important to me. Hugs!

    1. Diane,
That is wonderful you have decluttered.
The cabinet I thought I was clearing out books from, somehow is still full. Tidier, but full. There are some books I'm going to keep. I wish it wasn't so many. lol

  9. A place for everything and everything in its place is how I like to roll. Ideally. I don't always live up to that, but I try.

  11. I am getting ready to go on a serious work of whittling down my craft supplies. I think I've finally got the motivation, and method. Simplifying this part of my life would be a welcomed thing, I believe.
