Environment & Irony

    More thoughts on moving...

If you had to choose, then which state would you move to?

I'm not keen about moving from Vermont. But, I think about James Joyce in 1904, moving out of Ireland because writing there was difficult for him. In my mind, I think maybe if I move out of state, then I can achieve a refresh environment to write better. I have lived in 5 different states, and part of a summer in New York City. And yet, none of those places gave me the creative energy to finish a novel.

Maybe if I moved to Europe, that might be the magnitude of change I need. The chances of that happening depends on winning the lottery. I don't use games of chance to help me plot my future.

Environment. Does it all land on how I feel about where I live? In some respects, the answer is yes. The irony is, if I finish a novel, and it sells, then I will have the means to move.
I am weary of seeing tranquil waters in a forest atmosphere outside and/or inside a cabin. I am weary of seeing photographs of dreamy beach cottages. I want to live in those places, not just live with the images. Vermont is beautiful. But, I am not living in that beauty. I have to travel to see it.

    1. Debbie,
The New Jersey shore has a unique vibe that no other beach I've be on has.
My best teen memories were made in Asbury Park.

  2. I contemplate that periodically. Michigan has world's worst roads and has become more and more conservative. But where would I go? It's cold enough here -- as much as I love New England, would I want to go where it is colder and longer? Or south, where hot is humid and drags me down? Or West where it is also hot, often humid and has more fires? Ohio is nice enough (a tad too conservative) and I have family there but ... then there is the idea of a village in England, a small town in Provence, or even Canada where people are nice.... I don't think I'm going anywhere!

    1. Jeanie,
Ohio has a very New Englandish vibe, especially in the autumn.
      Michigan is a beautiful state.

  3. I have lived in different states too My home state is northern Indiana went to college in Wisconsin and early 70s and 80s lived in colorado and north carolina for awhile. things happened, I moved near my hometown for awhile-back then att and bell were still one company so I could transfer my job to different states which was nice. I wanted to retire out west but Hubs said No too cold with long winters. which I wouldn't like either. I actually like Missouri-we have lived rural here since 2003 and really like it. Perhaps you could figure out what may inspire you to write and then set up a dedicated space in your home for just that-to write. good luck hugs

    1. Winters are long in Colorado. But, the beauty there is above the rest.
A dedicated writing space would help.

  4. I have lived in Michigan all my life. If I could choose another state, it would be either Tennessee, Kentucky or South Dakota, but I wont leave Michigan now. I love living by our mighty river. The view is different every day. Janice

Living by water is a beautiful experience.
One of my favorite serene scenes is of an Afrom by a lake in autumn.

  5. I would move to Tasmania, but it's actually very nice here... where I live... I enjoy every day, especially now in the spring.
I wish you good luck with your choice, I don't think it hurts to take new paths in life.

  7. Well, I wouldn't want to live in any other state than California. Although, Georgia comes in a close second. Now, places in Europe - that is another story..... Paris, Greece, Italy, just to name a few. ; )

I'm with you on Greece. For no particular reason, I think Greece would have the vibe I would like.

  8. I really don't want to move anywhere else but as I look at what's happening in our town it's becoming more and more attractive to get out of here. It's no longer a safe place to live and there are many areas of town where you just don't dare go and I certainly don't want to go anywhere after dark. A number of years ago they built a jail here promising lots of new jobs (not) and promising that it would be minimum security. Not. And promising that the offenders would be taken back to their point of origin upon release. NOT. Instead they just shove them out the door and here they stay. The addition of a ton of new housing without having the proper infastructure in place is a whole 'nother headache. Driving anywhere is bad enough now and I shudder to think what it will be like when all those houses get filled. Thoughts of moving come down to the fact that this has been our home for our entire lives...we have good friends here. Friends mean a lot and I don't want to contemplate having to make new ones at this stage of my life.

    1. Maryanne,
I am sorry to hear your area is deteriorating, (can't believe I spelled that right the first try).
There are areas in New England that have been going that way for years. I don't think they will every recover.
I remember in Burlington, Vermont walking home from my part time reastaurant job at 2 AM. Now, I wouldn't feel
      safe during the daylight.

  9. I am quite content to live where I do, on this island off the coast of western Canada. There is a great variety of nature - oceans, rivers, lakes, forests, beaches, mountains, etc. But I do love to travel to Europe to see the history and culture there. What ties me to where I live most of all are the people in my life, my family and my friends.
