Voter Registration Purges

Voter purging is when a registered voter is removed from the voter registration list where they vote. It keeps the voter registration lists up to date.

In Vermont, for example, if you don't vote in 2 consecutive general elections, then your name is removed aka purged from that voter registration list.

I've been voting in Vermont for decades. This is the first time I remember my voter registration being purged. I've missed elections in the past, but never that I recall purged because of it. I re-registered online.

This is a Very Important election year.

Please, make sure you are properly registered to vote.

Update, Monday:
Today I received a confirmation email from Vermont dot gov.
My re-registration over the weekend has been received and approved by the city clerk. I am a registered voter!

  1. I haven’t heard of the purging of voter registration lists happening here. Hope not anyway!

    1. Marie,
Canada not having purges makes sense.
Unless a person moves away or dies, purging makes zero sense.

  2. The Republicans are hoping you didn't notice until it was too late.

    1. Bill,
That can work for both sides.
Some of the things being attributed to both parties has entered the comedy stage. I read a headline that says a hurricane was manipulated to wipe out the areas where there are the most Republicans.

  3. It's happening in a number of states. I'm glad you found out in time to reregister. Check again before you vote!

    1. Liz,
The registration website cautions to make sure the city clerk has entered your voter registration online that you make. I will check tomorrow what the process is.

  4. I find just the thought of being purged from voter's lists abhorrent and beyond unbelievable. So much about the political process between the way the US does things and Canada defies logic.

    1. Maryanne,
The reasoning behind purging voters who are alive and well is an example of why folks need to be diligent about what legislators are up to.

I will check with the city clerk to make sure my name is registered. I re-registered online over the weekend. It will take a day or two to get through.

  6. Ah Maywyn so good that you found out about this situation. I am not sure that happens in Ohio - will have to check in with our Board of Elections in the county. Visited your beautiful state a week ago. It was wonderful and the Green Mountains are gorgeous. Hope you are now seeing some lovely fall colors. Hugs!

It is in the news that Ohio purged 155,000 voters in order to make sure the voter registration lists are accurate.

  7. wow, i have never heard of this. it seems a little unfair to a registered voter. i know for sure we did not vote in the last general election, but did in the one before. we all need to get out and have our voices heard!!

    1. Debbie,
Limiting the number of times a voter has to vote or else get purge isn't fair.
Check your state's website for a feature to check your voter registration status.
