Day 101 of Week 15 April 2025

Lake Champlain June 2016 |
The Farmer’s Almanac has for summer 2025 hot & dry for most of Vermont with hot & rainy for the northern band of the state.
The majority of America’s lower 48 is also predicted to be hot and dry.
Summer. The outdoor space I can access the most is out my door. Every summer I sketch a plan of how I want my deck to look. While it has been close some years, it had not been near enough most years. The problem is all about ambition aka designs above my budget.
This year my plans are budget friendly. I have enough planters. Spray paint, seeds, soil, bamboo stakes, and tarp are the things I need to buy.
What surprises me is the price of chairs. Resin, plastic chairs are cheaper than web and tube chairs. Browsing online, I found the perfect chair in the color I want. At $100.00 US dollars, they are a big no for me.
Patio chairs at $25.00 US dollars fit my budget. I can buy on sale and spray paint them the color I want. Then I remember that I have a couple of chairs. I bought them a few years ago at a thrift store for $5.00 US dollars each. That frees up funds for a good waterproof camping tarp.
Summer is looking better and better.
Do you plan your outdoor space each year?

We don’t change things much from year to year. This year, we have to replace the patio floor boards. It is costly…
ReplyDeleteMarie,
DeleteCostly is most everything. I hope you can find materials to upcycle if possible.

When we were homeowner, the answer would be yes, we did plan our outdoor space as far as plantings and seating. Now, as apt dwellers, we no have those responsibilities. The only outdoor planning that’s done are the decos outside our apt entry and the herb garden on the LR windowsill.
ReplyDeleteBeatrice,
DeleteWindowsills are gardens on a smaller scale.

It's rather hard to plan much in the way of our outdoor space due to the space constraints of a balcony. I would love to put something down on the floor to cover the peeling concrete but what I want is wood and very expensive. We did splurge a couple years ago and bought some nice (albeit plastic) adirondack chairs but we can't see out over the solid balcony wall because the chairs are too low. We would have a nice view of the river if the walls were plexiglass instead of rusting metal that the building management painted an ugly brown. Not exactly a place of beauty but at least the RC fills it with planters of vegetables wherever he can.
ReplyDeleteMaryanne,
DeleteA balcony is a treat to have in an apartment building. Screened in even better.
May
Our outdoor space is pretty much the same, year to year, unless something breaks. But good you can update the old chairs and save for something else!
ReplyDeleteJeanie,
DeletePlanters break too easily nowadays. Upgrading to studier pots is on my agenda.
Waiting for the warmer weather to get the spray paint going is a spring ritual for me.

I live in the mountains, so things grow pretty wild here. I do spruce up the lawn in Spring and Fall, and gather the pine cones that have fallen to the ground. And I have been wanting two white Adirondack chairs for the front porch. I do hope you get some chairs that you want.

Sheri,
DeleteAdirondack chairs have charm and are comfortable. They can also have a seat so deep it can be difficult to get up.
