The first fad I remember as a kid is lost in memory. Most fads that cost money were not within our low income budget. I do recall having a Hula Hoop. Most everything else was second hand (or more).
Pulling that realization over the last forty years is like dragging mud out of a puddle. By the time the mud is out of the water, what was in the hand has washed away. Fads are like that, high fade value.
In the electronic era of buying the latest, there are more fads that I have not owned than there were when I was a kid. I’ve never owned a Walkman, a Blackberry or any game video player thing. The computer is not a fad nor is a smartphone.
So, we are sort of in the tech fad era, that appears to have no end other than AI replacing humans.
As for myself, I’ve entered the era of not opening the blinds can make it feel like morning at noon because I’ve been on the Internet too long to notice time as it flies.
What era do you feel you’re in?
.

These days I'm beginning to feel like I'm in 1930s/40s Germany. Not an era in which I want to stay. I had a hula hop too -- never did it well, lie most things that require coordination. I still wish I had my trolls, though.
ReplyDeleteJeanie,
DeleteVery good observation, spot on. Sad about your trolls. They are popular even now.

Not an era but I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone these days!
ReplyDeleteMarie,
DeleteTwilight Zone is another apt description. 👍
We grew up low income and the first gen kids of immigrants too busy trying to make ends meet to care about fads. Currently I am in the too much to do and not enough time era.
ReplyDeleteHena,
DeleteYour era may be one you look back on as one of the best.

My favorite music to listen to includes the Big Band sound, although I was born at the end of the 40s decade. A second favorite is the 50s, even though I listed to 60s music as a teen. My upbringing was middle class and fads escaped me as I can’t recall owning anything considered “popular” back then, aside from a portable 9V transistor radio (remember those?) and it was one of my proudest possessions. How things have changed as I now have a portable computer, bluetooth ear buds, current cell phone and more.
ReplyDeleteBeatrice,
DeleteBig band music is lively.
Yes to the transistor radio! Mine is red with a leather case with a strap. Amazing I still had it. I gave it to my brother.
Same era as you, memories are stronger listening to 1950s music.

The first fad I recall is when hot pants were 'in' and I had a pair made with bright neon green and white hound's tooth fabric. I imagine I looked like something out of a horror movie! Imagine me - 5'9" and doing well to be a hundred pounds decked out in large print green and white hounds tooth hot pants. The stuff that nightmares are made of!
ReplyDeleteMaryanne,
DeleteHot pants was a fad ahead of its time. White & green houndstooth hot pants would make a fun quilt motif.
I saved my 1975 short shorts that could pass for hot pants. 😂
