Watching versus Reading

After last night’s sleep out, I made sure to be awake tonight. As I type, it is 10:20 PM EDT, 16 February 2026. There is nothing on television I care to watch until after the eleven o’clock news. I do like to view some of the Olympics.

Watching.

YouTube and Instagram has been interesting in two aspects. Daydreaming, hinging on things I see that interests me, varies more when watching Instagram than YouTube. The other is observing, how passing from one interest to another flows as I view both.

A big picture emerges that I watch too much television.

Reading. I never feel that way when I read books. I don’t recall ever in my life thinking or saying that I do too much reading.

Yay for books!

    1. Marie,
The balance of book vs TV is rather striking. I think it shows where the mind is meant to be.

    1. Jeanie,
Sadly for me, I don’t read enough. I will after this revelation.

  3. I used to be a prolific reader, but I haven't read much for years now. And I am dismayed at how much Youtube content I consume, but it's mostly in the background as I craft or cook - two activities that pass better for me with something else to occupy/entertain? my brain. It's not TV or Youtube that has replaced reading, but handcrafting, actually, is the main reason. Sometimes I listen to an audio book, but it's not my favorite way of reading - it rarely has staying power for me.

    1. Becki,
Youtube n the background is good for listening as you do other things.

    1. Janice,
Making time for books is a good direction. I’m going that way myself.

  5. I agree - yay for books! I visit our local library at least twice a week, picking up books I've put on 'hold'. Their web site makes it entirely too easy to push a button to select books. We're both big readers so don't know what we'd do without the library.

    1. Maryanne,
Your library is up to date. I will see if our library here has that service.
I checked out 2 titles, in person, this morning to get a good start on my reading more plan.
      Happy Reading!
