Open Water

Dead Creek East Branch
Cold & Windy

There is still open water on the lake
and at Dead Creek in Addison, Vermont.
Lunch outdoors was not a good idea.
It was too cold and windy.

A Bit of Brrr

At Sunrise 8 January 2024

Brrr.

A dusting of snow last night covers the bird seed. Thus, requiring a shovel off, I'm out there early, later than the birds, but early. The light is dull on the photograph. In person, the air is clear enough to show sharp outlines. In the cold, I have to be careful to not breath too close to the lens or else it will fog up the scene a bit.

Why is it when I Google clouds, nearly all the images don't represent the formation I'm searching for? The clouds in the background are clearly stratus, (estimating below 6000 feet). If you have an accurate description, then please leave a comment. Thank you

Happy Bubble Bath Day!

A Cold Cloud

Cold Cloud Steam in February 2023

The clouds, bottom and lower right in the photograph, happens over water when the water temperature is warmer than the ambient air. The water in the distance, I believe, is Lewis Creek, Ferrisburgh, Vermont. The pink are higher elevation clouds. On Saturday, the temperatures outdoors were minus zero Fahrenheit.*

Sorry the picture isn't sharper. It was taken with my phone on zoom. Lewis Creek is 1 or 2 miles from my location.

* Of all the words I have to look up the spelling, one of the most difficult, Fahrenheit, I remember 99.9% of the time.

The Cold

Winter 2023

 -3°F (-19.44°C), 3 February 2023
Along Route 7, Addison County Vermont, that was the ambient temperature on my vehicle's thermometer.
The wind chill I'm guessing
 was around -20°F.

Serious freezing cold!

Please, be careful outdoors.
 Bundle up!
Scarf. Thick Gloves. Hat.
sweater. Thermal underwear.
Thick Winter Coat and Boots.
Also note,
metal freezes fast,
as in piercings might need
extra protection.

A quick walk back and forth
maybe a hundred yard total,
one of my hands was bare,
one had on a thick fleece glove.
The inch plus top of my fingers,
including thumb were freezing!
Tingling discomfort cold.
My thumb ached as it
took the longest to warm up.
In that short time,
for that short distance,
I believe frost nip,
the before frost bite stage,
was beinning in my fingers.
I was told the elderly
feel the cold faster.
I say, real faster!

I have been out in serious cold before.
Yesterday was the coldest.
Today, the wind chill is even worse.
