Aristarchus on Earth's Moon

Moon Waxing Gibbous
29 July 2023, 8:58 PM EDT
87% illuminated
Vergennes, Vermont

The next full Moon is 1 August at 2:31 PM EDT, the Sturgeon Moon.

Note on the center edge left a tiny white dot, on zoom appears to be a crater. I believe that is Aristarchus, a 40 KM (25 mile) diameter crater.

  5. Great photo! I always love a full moon that looks close enough you feel as though you could touch it. When I was working we always knew when the moon was full, even without looking, because it would bring out the crazies in people.

  8. What a splendid picture of the moon. I wonder why the crater shows up white. I guess it is the way the sun catches it.

  9. Eileen,
Good zoom on my camera is good. Cell phone won't go to crater closeness.
    Have a great Week!

  11. Maryanne,
Yes, I remember working days were like that. That's so cool you had the same experience.

As I aged, though, I notice during the no moon phase, I can be clumsy.

  14. Jenny,
I believe you are right that the sun catches the crater just so. I wondered the same thing. Then I saw in a picture the sunshine. It must have a tall ridge.
