A Summer Rose

Rock Rugosa Rose

The hardy rock rugosa rose* holds my heart since I was 8 years. Vacationing on Cape Cod, I saw them in a patch of neglected landscape. As I was weeding, I discovered there had been a circular garden there with a hand painted sign in the middle, Rexham Beach.

I look on the map to see if the garden is still there. Things changed so much, I can't tell where the cottage is with the garden across the street.

*A comment reveals the correct name is Rugosa Rose. Thank you Ivy

  1. I've never seen a rose like that. Such a vibrant color. So glad it brought back some fond memories of your trip to Cape Cod when you were growing up. : )

    Have a splendid week.

  2. Hi Sally Pumpkin!! I'm so glad you are still here!! Thanks for stopping by my blog, I always loved hearing from you. This rose is I think what here in Maine we call the Rugosa Rose...it grows wild on the coast.

  3. Sheri,
The Rock Rose is a great plant for large spaces near roads and buildings. It is planted a lot around New England, especially the coastal areas.

    A great week to you!

  4. Rita,
Thank you for Rugosa rose name. I think I may got the rose in the photo name wrong. The Rugosa and Rock roses look similar, but aren't quite the same. The Rock Rose looks like a hibiscus.

  7. Kathy,
I read that the rugosa rose hips are edible, made into jams and such. There are tons of rose hips on those plants in from of the grocery store.

  8. Jan,
The rose blooms well in summer, even when it rains too much.

  10. Kathy,
The location where the roses are is at a grocery store. I'd love to have a place for a mass planting where I live.

The Rugosa rose makes a very nice flowering hedge.

  13. I've always loved those roses the most because they actually have some scent - not like the highly messed with roses that look showy but don't have a bit of scent.

  14. Maryanne,
Speaking of a big rose scent, there is a white field rose you can see growing along fences near old fields that have a huge scent that carries wide. It is called a Multiflora rose, small cluster flower with tons of thorns. Not a rose you'd want growing in your garden.

  16. Becki,
It is weird to think of being a younger age. Being silly back then was so much fun.
