Folklore & Forecasts
Wooly Bear Caterpillar 2014 |
According to folklore, the longer the brown band on the Wooly Bear caterpillar, the milder the winter. In 2014, the band was long, visible as he scurried stretched out across the driveway.
North American Winter 2014~2015
Maybe the Wooly Bear isn't such a good weather predicter.
The Old Farmer's Almanac and the National Weather Service, have better weather forecasts.

This fall consider being on the look out for signs of what the 2023 ~ 2024 winter will be here in the Northern Hemisphere. Meanwhile, fluff up those sweaters and dust out those boots.
Autumn is only 9 days away.
Out my window here in Vermont today, it looks like summer with rain from a dull overcast sky. Out and about, I will wear shoes and a rain jacket instead of sandals and a sweater. Thankfully, today is a very light on errands.
There are some days, like last Saturday, when I was out all day hunting down things. Overall, doing errands can be very tedious when there are many stops or long distances between them.
In winter, that changes. I bundle up both clothing and errands wise to reduce my time out in the cold. I have begun stocking up on just in case food, planning meals for leftovers and freezing, flashlight batteries, reading list, and projects. A positive about winter is that being outdoors can't be ruined by too much snow like summer is ruined with too much rain.
Earth needs the snow, not to excess, but enough to replenish water supplies, and give plants that need a cold spell for growth, like apples do.
Instead of being grumpy about cold and snow, enjoy watching Nature on the go this winter.

Today, I got Wordle in 2!
😂😁💖
I do feel humble and sparkly.
We get so much of winter, if we let it make us sad, life would be a misery for six months or more. May as well adjust and enjoy!
ReplyDeleteMarie,
ReplyDeleteYou have a wonderful attitude towards winter.
It is better to be indoors on purpose from the cold than to sit and sulk about rainy summer weather. :)
In the Scottish Outer Hebrides winter is usually a matter of wind and rain and more wind. Snow is rare. Sub-zero temperatures are rare.
ReplyDeleteRain or snow ~ try to get out anyway ~ if not it is a chance to cocoon and do whatever I choose ~ Good idea to stock up, of course ~ lol
ReplyDeleteWishing you good health, laughter and love in your days,

Graham,
ReplyDeleteWind and rain sounds like a lovely winter.
It is that way in Central Texas as well.
I missed the snow, but not that much. :)
Carol,
ReplyDeleteCocoon is a lovely description of being indoors in winter.
Hugs
I also normally spend autumn stocking up on stuff to hopefully minimize necessary errands on freezing, or winter-messy days. I don't know if I just haven't been observant, but I haven't seen a wooly bear caterpillar in ages. They make me feel all nostalgic for my childhood for some reason.
ReplyDeleteBecki,
ReplyDeleteGood point.
I haven't seen a Wooly Bear since I went on walks to downtown years ago. I didn't know they turn into tiger moths.
I enjoy all the seasons, but my favorites are spring and fall
ReplyDeleteKathy,
ReplyDeleteBeing a 4 seasons person is wonderful. More of Nature is available to experience in 4 seasons.
I don't mind the snow as long as i don't have to drive in a storm. The first storm is thrilling when I am home and and tucked in all cozy
ReplyDeleteCathy
Well done on Wordle. Don't you love it when that happens? It's definitely feeling fall here, though they say this weekend will be nice I hope they're right. I need a little sunshine and warmth!
ReplyDeleteCathy,
ReplyDeleteSpot on! That's the way to enjoy snow, when home and cozy.
Jeanie,
ReplyDeleteI hope you get some sunshine and warmth this weekend.
It is amazing what a glowing heart it feels to get a 2 on Wordle. It is my 2nd or 3rd time. After a week plus of 5s and misses, the thrill is appreciated more.
Always smile at winter's predictions based on Wooley worm's coat, how high the hornet nests are and what the Farmer's almanac has to say. Most likely they all three can be wrong :)!! I will just wait and see. Hugs! P.S. I will be like you though and get prepared.
ReplyDeleteDebbie,
ReplyDeleteHornet nests are something not easy to figure out when they build them under chairs. lol
A little bundle of fluff.
ReplyDeleteWilliam,
ReplyDeleteThat's a cute description that fits.
Well here in Michigan they are predicting more snow then usual. It is good to prepare for Winter as one never knows. I do like reading the Farmer's Almanac online. Janice
ReplyDeleteJanice,
ReplyDeleteThe Farmer's Almanac website is a treat to read. It is on the top list of notices to receive emails for.
