A Sleep Pattern

Apple Leaf on silver tray
About ten years ago I was fascinated by a leaf
attached to an apple I bought. I took several photos
on various surfaces in different light.

There is no telling what might fascinate a person. There are more photographs like that in my Blogger folder. I 'm awake with the time to scroll through them.
There are days, sometimes many, when I will not want to sleep at night. The definition of insomnia doesn't quite fit. I've experienced trouble getting to sleep and/or staying asleep. This is different. During bouts of want to stay awake, after 3  or 4 AM, I usually turn off the light (or not), and fall asleep just like that, snooze city.

I've read many headlines, (and a few paragraphs in), that getting enough sleep is very important to one's health. I haven't been a 6 hour  or more sleeper since I was a teenager. A 3 to 5 hour night is the rule. If I'm really tired or have been very active that day, I might reach 6 hours. If I make it to 7 hours, then I wake up feeling like aliens kidnapped me. Seriously.

What do I do?
Internet. YouTube videos. Scroll through photo folders. Paint. Think. Write. Read. Watch PBS streaming. Play Wordle after midnight. (This week, I had Wordle on 2 to make my life time total 3, maybe 4 times.) After 3 AM  I do online jigsaw puzzles.
I go through marathons of shows on YouTube for archaeology, history, furniture, building, travel, collecting, art, and hygge.
It is now 1:31 AM EDT. I finished watching the news on YouTube. Wordle today I got in 5 tries. I checked the weather and recent earthquakes. Now I am typing this blog post.

And I'm hungry. But no a yawn to be had.

How are your sleep patterns?

It was for a painting.

 P.S.

Leaving comments on other blogs has a glitch. When using Chrome, the pop up says comment failed, try again later.
On the Edge browser, I have no problem leaving comments.

Also when using Chrome, Clicking on the profile pumpkin, the  pop up doesn't load for me to select an option. I have to go into Gmail, and then the pumpkin icon pop up shows the options.
Glitches like that can be glitches or somebody fooling around with your website, your blog, your account. Based on my experience, the browser, the website will never tell you if somebody hacked your account unless major news outlets have the story of a major browser breach.
In other words, if you comment at places that are controversial, then glitches might be a consequence.

  1. Mine sleep pattern is miserable. I can get to sleep but not stay asleep. I woke at 1:30 last night thinking it was morning. I did get back to sleep. I was awake at 5:30. I had fallen asleep at midnight. That is a typical sleep pattern for me. Naps are a part of life.

  2. Ah, sleep - how elusive you be! I very rarely get a full night of sleep and often end up out on the couch with my tablet, playing solitaire. Having a Resident Chef who fully enjoys snoring doesn't help either. It's always a surprise when I wake up in bed in the morning.

  3. I'm amazed at people that can stay alert with little sleep, my mother in law was that way. I sleep 9 hours every night and most of the time I don't wake up during the night. Sometimes I don't even turn over. I know that is weird! I get lots of exercise and I am exhausted by 11 pm. But I wake up refreshed and always remember my dreams. More than you wanted to know...I know! lol Hugs!

  4. Marie,
Your sleep pattern is much like mine except for my don't want to sleep episodes. I think we have a type of insomnia.
I was given a print out of how to prepare the bedroom to help sleep better. It works on some days, not others.

  5. Diane,
Your hikes, all that fresh air are good for sleeping well.
I'm going to give it a try, take a walk every day to see if the fresh air helps.

  6. Sometimes when I find it hard to sleep, I drink a small glass of milk, and that helps. Also, I drink chamomile tea sometimes. But I know what you mean, when one can't sleep, you just want to get up and watch tv or read. ; )

  8. awwwww, sleep...most women suffer with some time type of insomnia. i always had trouble falling asleep, then staying asleep. after years, i finally gave in and started taking a sleeping pill. it's funny because i am active during the day, i feel exhausted, but without help, i can't fall asleep.

i often have the same problem you have when leaving comments. but when i go back, my comment is there...false alarm!!

the picture of the apple leaf is quite pretty!!

  9. I'm a pretty good sleeper when I don't wake myself (and Rick) up coughing like crazy. But I usually go back to sleep fairly fast, which is a relief.

Speaking of streaming PBS -- was it you who mentioned "American Buffalo" here? I can't remember but I watched it last night. It certainly was well timed in terms of indigenous people (more about them than the buffalo, in some ways) and the environment. It's worth a stream if you didn't catch it.

  10. Debbie,
The soothing tea route Sheri suggest is worthy of a try. I've heard from others that helps them as well.

The comment problem is sometimes due to 3rd party cookies setting.

  11. Jeanie,
Yes, I did post about the Ken Burns' American Buffalo series. I've seen a documentary that feels similar, more history of how the American government treated the indigenous people, the genocide, theft of lands and more.

I am impressed with how well the message of cultural differences is treated.

  12. My sleeping sounds similar to yours, though after being on steroids last week, which wouldn't let me sleep at all, I finally reached utter exhaustion about the second day off of them, and I've been in a much better sleep cycle since. I usually wake up on my own after 5 or 6 hours also. Makes me worry a bit since we're told sleep is essential for our health.

I find that picture fascinating. :)

  13. Good point, Becki, deep sleep is important.
I worry about it as well.
Last summer a thunderstorm system passed through. I didn't wake up as usual, quite a surprise. I think maybe we have more deep sleep than we realize.

  14. Maryanne,
There are pillows that I've heard help folks not snore or snore as much.
I hope there's a solution that helps Resident Chef sleep without the commentary audio.

  15. I have had sleep issues. I try to keep to a regular schedule in bed by 10 every night I drink sleepy tea or just a cup of hot water about an hour before. But I rise early. So if I get 6 to 7 hrs I am happy. I walk most every day and try to keep busy most if the day.

  16. Cathy,
The sleepy tea an hour before bed is helpful. Having a routine seems to be another helpful thing to do.

I think of the morning as having a routine, but at night it can be beneficial as well. No electronics before bedtime has given me an easier night.
