On the Branches of Time

Oh my!

A relative sent me a photograph of a watercolor I did January 1995.

I use to stare at the way the very thick main trunk leans over with its branches waving at the sky.

It was the first painting I did that year. There is another watercolor of the same tree that I probably did as a sketch before painting the one above. With no camera or cell phone in those days, I don't have a photograph of the tree. I painted it from sketches and looking out the window.

I feel inspired to start another sketchbook for plein air sketching.

  1. Maywyn this is a gorgeous watercolor. I just love your art, friend. Isn't it strange how far we have come with cameras in our phone and so many different ways to capture images that help us when we paint? 1995 doesn't seem so long ago but it was - guess that is what happens when we grow older...time just keeps movin' on. :)!! Hugs

  2. Debbie,
Almost 30 years ago is mind boggling. It feels more like 60 years.
    Hugs!

  3. Thank you, Sandy
I'm not sure, but I think a few years ago when I passed that place, the tree is gone.

  4. This is a lovely watercolor and how nice that it your relative still has it and sent a photo for you to share with us. By the way, I just realized your name is Maywyn and hope it's OK with you if I refer to you by it in future comments. As you may know my name is Dorothy and Beatrice on our blog and I use both interchangeably.

  5. Beatrice,
May or Maywyn, use whatever name you are comfortable with.
I've tried to address you as Dorothy. Each time, as soon as I go to type, I forget the name. I will try by thinking ruby slippers. :)

  10. Beautiful!! You put so much detail into this and, although not a trained painter, I was struck by the depth perception.

  11. Maryanne,
It is weird for me to be surprised by a painting I've done. I was really into branches back then.

Painting trees in winter is fun, takes a while, but worth it.

  15. Debra,
The new sketchbook is perfect for my lifestyle 2024 makeover. Now there's an excuse to get outdoors more as well as engage my attention on other things besides taking photographs of what I see. Brain exercise.

Slow is the key to getting bare branches and tree trunks just so.
