Canvas, Gesso & Thunder
I bought cheap pre-stretched canvases in a package from Michael's store. I removed that canvas, and added unprimed 10 ounce cotton duck. During the gesso/priming stage, I learned that my homemade gesso needs more water to flow well. Dry overnight between sanding prepares the canvas for paint. The more gesso, the smoother the surface. I prefer a roughish surface.
The smaller canvases (off frame) are gessoed over to reuse for plein air painting excursions. I need more bug spray for that to happen. Already 3 cans are at their last sputter.
For the outdoors painting sessions, I plan to use a plastic container that seals well. Spritzing water over the paint will keep them from drying out. The covered palettes I've bought, do not seal well enough to prevent acrylic paint from drying out. The problem is finding a sealed container flat and large enough to use as a palette. I may need to use two containers.

About the thunderstorms: Around 9 PM EDT, there was a system that flashed regularly for well over an hour at a location south of Vergennes, Vermont. I can't imagine the horror that must have been for those people and animals that do not like thunder storms. Relentless lightening it was.
In the late afternoon, around 4:30 PM EDT, it was so dark outdoors the outside lights came on. It was a scary 9 PM light. I then began to take regular notice of the sky and weather warnings. The pattern of rage and calm was unsettling.
The photograph is the horizon view from my patio window. It was around 9 PM EDT when the picture was taken. That is how bright the sky was, and in some events, pure white. I saw lightening bolts going straight down to wherever.
The rain at times was torrential, sideways sheet of rain almost a white out. There is a lot of flooding in Vermont, Update New York and New England areas where the storms passed through.

On a side note, Blogger has made changes here in Blogspot. The Add photo has a different format. And, the editing page where you type in, is wonkier than usual. For example, on the Paragraph choices, selecting Normal seems to jump in an extra space. Instead of single space, it adds a double one. Ugh. Try to fix it, makes things worse. The photographs on this post, are all selected to be on the left, not centered.
Yea, when I tried to download my pics on my post recently, it wouldn't let me. So, I just copy and pasted them. That was awhile ago, so maybe it is working again. They are always trying to fix things, and sometimes it only makes it harder on us, ugghh. Stay safe with the thunderstorms. We haven't had any lately.

Sheri,
DeleteThere is something going on between comments, Blogger and the Atom program. Google/Blogger does not always recognize me as signed in. Unless I select the Salty name, the program lists me as Anonymous. It is weird.
I had to take a detour today due to a road closure. I didn't hear about it on the news. It is always good to check the state website.
**the downloading of pictures on a post seems to be working now. And I would have never thought of trying again til I read your post. Thank you! : )
ReplyDeleteThat is good news, Sheri!
DeleteThe thunderstorms you had do sound frightening. I'm glad you are safe.
ReplyDeleteThanks for mentioning the editing page issue. I always choose normal, and today when I was typing I could tell something was different, but I couldn't quite figure it out. What you've explained here must be it. Why do they have to keep messing with things?
I noticed the downloading photos page looked different, but it works for me.
Becki,
DeleteOver the years on Blogger, if one thing is changed, then there will surely be glitches elsewhere. A Gmail sign in page has been stating or months to look out for changes to happen. I guess they have.
We had the rain here too -- inside and out. I'm going to check shortly to see if it's dried out with the fans. I love learning how you prep the canvases and will look forward to seeing the results. I noticed the photo thing for one day -- clunky when you use lots of photos like I do. But back to normal today.
ReplyDeleteJeanie,
DeleteA large planter that has drainage holes, filled up with so much rain that the plants wilted. Unreal how much rain fell.
I hope your garden is well.
Blogger switches are always a nuisance.
ReplyDeleteWilliam,
DeleteYour are right about that!
I read about many areas in VT having been hit with serious flooding, so glad your area was not one of these. And, I also noticed the blogger changes you mentioned, but getting photos to stay where I would prefer has often been an issue.
ReplyDeleteBeatrice,
DeleteI learned it is easier to add photos as i type the text, not all at once.
I used to love thunderstorms but now I find them downright scary, or at least most of them seem to be. I don't remember the weather being such extremes as we're seeing now. I hate them even more when they come at night and you can't see the colour of the sky to know if it's a 'take immediate action' situation.
ReplyDeleteMaryanne,
DeleteUse to love is the same here.
The thunderstorms in the last 30 days have given me reason to be more cautious of them. I've heard grumbling thunder that is much deeper than usual. The Beryl tail end that reached us here, in the sound every minute the sky lt up. It was scary.
