Old Illustrations

Book illustrations

Hand colored

During the change over to the winter furniture arrangement, I found in my stuff the little black and white illustrations I cut out from  falling apart 1800s grade school primer. (I researched the book and the value first.)

I glaze, color, glaze, and add coats of clear sealer. Matt or shiny sealer has yet to be decided. I'm leaning towards shiny because it will lighten up the artwork better. I will add a stiff felt back and jewelry hardware.

I'm undecided on pin or necklace pendants. I rather fond of the idea wearing the fox as a pin on a tweed jacket this fall. The Old Mill is best as a pin because at 2 x 2.5  inches small, I think it would be lost as a pendant. Other illustrations that are larger will definitely be pendants.

  2. Those old book illustrations are delightful. I've always loved pins and brooches. The fox pin on a tweed jacket sounds very cute for Fall. You are always working on some creative project or another, and I think that's wonderful. Doing craft projects is always a fun and good thing to do.

    1. Sheri,
Craft projects, working with your hands, even baking and chopping up veggies, is almost meditative in how much it can clear the mind of debris.

    1. Debbie,
The fox does have charm. Looking closer, there are two little rabbits in a borrow that he's looking at.

  6. I hope you'll post pictures of the finished items. I never would have thought of using old illustrations in quite that way so you are brilliant to come up with it.

    1. Maryanne,
Folks cut out book illustrations to decoupage. I can't claim the idea. I can, however, make
prettier jewelry than what I see online. (big smile here)
Some of those old illustrations would be perfect for your quilting.

  7. I love the coloring on them. I especially love the fox but they are both beautiful. I love the idea of turning them into pins.
