Seeing Beyond the Haze

Haze July 2025
Looking east from Rt 7
towards the Green Mountains

The summer haze plus smoke from the wildfires in Canada limits the visibility here in New England. In the photo above, traveling the roads, the farthest are the Green Mountains’ Presidential range about 15 miles away. As the crow flies, maybe 3-4 miles (guessing).

Prayers for Canada

A blue haze in the distance is normal for hot summer days. Thinking about doing such a landscape painting reminds me of the English landscape artist, J.M.W. Turner.
The foreground adds a color variety the horizon lacks. What may feel too blah can be beautiful if the composition is done just right.

Whatever you look at or paint,
Enjoy the last days of July 2025.

  2. It's hard to believe the end of July is here. Summer goes by so quickly. Luckily, we do not have fire smoke here right now. It could come as the brush is tinder dry all over our province.

  3. I was watching a painting show yesterday and the woman reminded viewers of how things get more blue/gray in a landscape background. She's right -- at least here. I always think of Turner with the wildly bright water battle paintings. I forgot about ones that are more calm!

      Jeanie,
Atmosphere also impacts on the photos we take. The key is to remember which season the sky is clearest.

  4. Sorry our wildfire smoke is reaching as far as you. Lucky for me the fires aren't close to us but we still get the smokey haze. I am nervous about the fact that, after the ice storm, some guys thought it would be a wise move to pile the fallen branches beneath the trees just across the road from us. Of course now they're nothing but a pile of tinder waiting for a wayward match.

      Maryanne,
The city street maintenance department should remove them.
They are rat condos and tinder.

    2. Sadly the area in question is on private property with an absentee owner so nothing the city can really do - or, more correctly, nothing they WILL do.

    3. In most communities there’s an ordinance for owners to
      keep the property tidy.
Piles of brush attracts rats. Add a building with big dumpsters increases the chance of rats moving in.
Years ago a bunch of old lilacs were heavily pruned. When the cuttings were finally removed months later, rats showed up under our old wooden decks.

  5. These fires are so scary. We had one up here about an hour and a half away, and it is just about out. I believe it's almost contained.
