The Moon, Writing & Reading

Northern Hemisphere
Over Vergennes, Vermont, 2 July 2017

Identifying a photograph is important as adding the
who, what when, where and
sometimes the how to an article.

For the Moon photo, I added the
where and when in the caption.
The  photo was first posted
on this blog on 7 July 2017.

Thinking back on writing, I've taken more writing courses in my life time that I have art courses beginning with journalism in high school to experimental writing in college. I could not tell you in a conversation the technical terms of grammar, techniques of writing or even the define the types of writing with good accuracy.

Over time we can develop habits. For example, I use but, and, sometimes, and thus too often. Keeping our writing skills fresh can be done by reading, fiction as well as non fiction.

Twice a year, I make a summer and winter reading list that is mainly books recommended by bloggers. I also subscribed to Good Reads.

Today I will be reading, doing laundry, staying indoors, and, washing floors. At the moment, it is time to make coffee.

Have a wonderful day!

  2. Thank you, Debra

It was fairly hot outdoors early today, lots of sunshine.

    Stay cool!

  3. I don't use thus much, but "But" and "And" -- always! And sometimes, it's because you need to!

  4. Hope it was a great day. Stay cool over there!

  5. Jeanie,
True, a need to is a need.
I admire those long sentences in 19th Century books, all those commas.

  6. Marie,
I hope your day was good as well. The hiking path post on your blog was a treat to read.
It won't be long before the higher temperatures reach PEI.

Despite the heat, in an unusual burst of energy, I did manage a short time outdoors.

  7. I have found many good books through recommendations from other bloggers. Knowing how to write well is a very necessary skill. One needn't remember all the terminology of how to write if one practices putting the knowledge into practice. I hope summer brings you much joy.

  8. Lorrie,
Remembering every day that it is summer will make it last longer. The weather has been iffy with all the rain, and now the heat and humidity keeping us indoors most of the time.
The flowers are looking very happy though.

    Happy summer to you

  9. Journalism was my college major and my working career involved various forms of using my words, as children are apt advised to do. As you noted, there is often the tendency to reuse, misuse and abuse certain words. My personal choices being and, because and so and undoubtedly several others. I enjoy writing and my blog posts tend to run longish as I revel in not only being able to express sometimes random thoughts, but more so to elicit comments to read how others react to them.

Like yourself, I also appreciate reading recommendations from fellow bloggers p, often adding them to my library reading wish list.

  12. I have a little different twist on the need for identifying photos that comes from the standpoint of being interested in genealogy. When I was going through a massive amount of photos with my dad it was a chore to attempt to identify who the people were. Some he knew, others he had no clue. I have uploaded all the family photos to Ancestry for others to benefit from and then I sent the originals to the more immediate family members. The rest I simply had to toss due to not having space to store them.
I've only ever taken part in one writing 'course' and it didn't last long. It was sponsored by our local Women's Resources (for abused women) and the entire process was aimed at bashing men. Understandable, due to their circumstances, but not all men are bad. My friend and I lasted two sessions (both of us were happily married) and found it just too overwhelming.

  13. Debbie,
Thank you. Writing can be scary when wondering if it is done right.

    Have a fun weekend

  14. Maryanne,
It must have been sad for you to let go of old photographs, but rewarding to have saved so many.
Your experience with that women's group is eye opening to me because I also experienced a negative atmosphere with such a group years ago, early 1990s, as a volunteer trainee.
