Photograph of the Week

That is what happens when I decide to not
pull out a lot of holiday decorations.
I buy more ornaments at the thrift store*.
Thinking this is a neat plot plan to try
a different theme this year,
homemade holiday ornaments.
I don't have to go through the decorations boxes.
I only put on my faux tree what I make
or buy at the thrift stores.
Chairs and snowpersons are a cute combination.

* I returned today hoping the scarf I didn't buy is still there. Somebody bought it. sigh.
I bought 3 ornaments, a sled, a flying Santa, and a hunting cap. Make that 4, a felt snowman.

  4. Diane,
A thrift store in Middlebury has gorgeous holiday decorations and holiday themed items for sale.
I notice the last few years, though, fewer and fewer vintage Christmas ornaments.

    Have a fun hiking weekend!

  5. That's the thing about thrifties, there's rarely a second chance at something you wished you'd bought. Oh well. It sounds as if you did well though.

  6. Liz,
    You are so right.
There are times when a budget should be stretched to prevent those return trips of disappointment.
I did do well, though, buying a nice warm sweater I didn't see yesterday. :)

  7. I'm avoiding thrift stores this time of year because I know I will want to bring some decorations home. Instead, when we decorated this afternoon, we got rid of almost half of our ornaments. If we didn't both love an ornament, it went in the 'donate' pile. And while we were at it, we kicked our old artificial tree, that shed all over everyyyyyything, to the garbage room too and made a trip to the store and came home with a lovely much smaller tree that won't shed. Ahhhh....we can breathe!

  8. One of our family members was famous for not buying things she saw and liked. She always went back and most of the time, the item was gone. Once her sister-in-law bought the item!

  9. Maryanne,
Many will smile when the see your donations.
    Happy Decorating!

  10. Marie,
That's funny her sister buying the item.
Not buying to regret is a difficult habit to break.
What bugs me most about the scarf is that the price was only $4.00. I hang my head in shame. :)

  13. Jeanie,
Holiday issue magazines have a wealth of ideas that are inspirational as well as encouraging for change each year.
There is clean cardboard piling up just waiting to be ornaments.

  14. Carol,
The old fashion glass ornaments are a favorite. They are rarely found nowadays.

The felt snowman is amazing. It looks handmade and has a lot of detail.

  17. I like your style of decorating, May. I'm getting simpler and simpler when it comes to Christmas decorating, yet I'm struggling to get rid of decorations I haven't used in years. These are not valuable decorations, or even special. I need to think on your philosophy here and maybe it will empower me to just donate the dozens of plastic gold and silver sparkly ball ornaments that take up a whole large tote box.

  18. We did not put up a tree this year because the New England holiday village takes up all the space near the living room windows,. That also means we did not sort through holiday ornaments (again). I have a small tree outside out apt on a small ledge and the decorations are from the dollar store, including the battery powered light strands. I do enjoy seeing holiday items in the thrift stores and have to restrain myself. Sorry that the scarf was gone when you returned, but not unexpected. From personal thrift store experience, if I see something and decide not to buy it, it most certainly will not be there on a return trip.

  19. Becki,
As with anything you donate, check online prices. Ebay is a good start. Addall and Abebooks are good resources for books. There are decorations that are selling for decent money, plastic ones at that.

The less is more holiday theme this year, thus far, is nice. I do, however, find myself wondering where the garland is on the bookshelf. :)

  20. Beatrice,
Your holiday decorations are nice to see the photos on your blog. An outdoor tree is a cheery thing to have.

There were a few things I didn't buy the first thrift store trip that were not there on my return. I take it as a lesson to remind me to buy it or put it out of my mind.
