Felt Snowwoman Ornament

There was a time when handmade had a charm that spoke of hearth, home, family, community, love. I'm not sure that holds as  much anymore when so many consumers buy foreign factory made goods that are handmade, (as beautiful as they may be).

There is a lot of detail in the felt ornamant*. I can't tell if it is handmade or a made in an assembly line. The stitching says handmade. Yet, I have seen the photographs of factory line women sitting on the ground making things by hand for foreign markets.

Did the person who made the ornament do it with love as a gift or dream of the people that have the money to give it as a gift?

🌲

* On closer inspection, wearing my trusty reading glasses, I see marks on the felt indicating where to stitch. I believe the ornament is made from a craft kit. Still, somebody put together that kit.

  1. I hope this cute ornament was not made at some poor person’s physical cost. This is an eye opening post!

  2. Your little snowman is a charmer! He definitely looks handmade but like you say it's hard to tell if he was made as a one-off or in an assembly like. I suspect it might have been made as a small grouping by someone who possibly gave them away as little gifts.

  3. Marie,
The money foreign workers are paid in many cases is horrid. But, it is money that gives them more than if they had no job at all.

  4. Maryanne,
Made as a gift or a holiday sale event, it does have that look. The detail in the edging takes a lot of time. I lifted the green vest in the back, on the white felt there are lines indicating where to stitch.
I think it may have been made from a craft kit.

  5. That is a sad thought. I would hope it was made with love but you never know nowadays.

  6. Whoever made it, Hena, they did an excellent job. It is a well made ornament.

  7. Felt is a wonderful fabric and handmade beats anything cranked out from a factory. When you buy something handmade, you’re not just buying an object, but a testament of someone’s skill. And you’re supporting someone who is keeping a traditional craft alive.

  8. That is the cutest snowman ornament. Homemade ornaments are the best, but you're right, you don't see them that much anymore. There is so much joy in this little ornament. He's a keeper for sure. ; )
