Mug, Fog & Thrift Stores

Old Orchard Beach Maine

What a delightful mug to find at a thrift store, heavy, gorgeous blue, summery artwork with the name, Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Thus ends the Winter 2024 yearly hunt for a special mug.

On very foggy late morning, I made the trip to Middlebury to drop off a box of donations. From Route 7, the mountains are not visible, even the lower ones close by are whited out.

There are paths I follow at each thrift store to check on things I am interested in. Pans for example are a big plus. I rarely buy one, but when I do, it is what I need at a very good price. Art supplies, office supplies, yarn, tee shirts, mugs, glasses, dishes, furniture room, kitchen things, and, maybe the footwear section. I also like to have a quick look at the gowns and wedding dresses.

Is there a path you follow at your local thrift store?

  2. Debbie,
I hope someday you happen to be at a place where there is a thrift store. They are a lot of fun.

Sturdy is the first thing I look for in a mug. Color is next, and shape after that. Price is last when I shop for the yearly special winter mug.

  3. I usually go to sweaters to see if there's anything like linen or cashmere to unravel. Then on top of the racks, to find yarn and stitching items. Then the men's department in case of anything good for Handsome Son. I look at leather bags in hope of one I can make into slippers, too. Prices have gone up quite a bit recently.

I usually leave donations at the shed outside, and that's my excuse for shopping..

  4. Liz,
Felted wool and wool yarns in gorgeous colors were in plastic bags at the thrift store today. I've seen similar on yours and other blogs. It was surreal to see them in person.

Leather bags, that's to be noted because there's a found object project ongoing that I use small pieces of leather. Thank you

Price increases, I agree with you. There are a few things at one thrift store, furniture mostly, that prices have gone way up. The charity thrift, you can ask for a lower price, and they will consider it.

At this point in my life ~ I try not to buy anything I don't really need as I have too much 'stuff' ~ hugs,

  8. Awesome find! I usually need clothes when I shop at a thrift store, I am happy we have an animal shelter thrift shop not too far from me. I do check mugs too and the craft area but this shop rarely has good art or craft supplies.

  9. I wish -- but I tend to steer clear because I will always find something I don't need. I should be opening my own thrift store! That's an awfully cute mug -- I'm glad you found that one.

  10. Carol,
Not buying stuff is on my list as well. If something does make it in the door, then something must go out.
    Hugs!

Right time at the right place. I wasn't going to look for a mug this year in celebration I haven't broken the one I bought a few years ago. lol

  12. Kathy,
It is good you have a thrift close by. Just browsing is a good time to be out and about.

  13. Jeanie,
That is a good idea, to have your own thrift shop. You have a good eye for beautiful things. I'm sure you'd do well.

  14. Marie,
You have gorgeous places to walk outdoors on PEI.

In winter around here, the thrift stores are one of the few public places to get out and about.

  15. What a great mug find at the thrift store and the color was wonderful as well. I enjoy thrifting, and lately have been seeking out the stationary area for any letter paper or cards that would be useful for the Letters Against Isolation correspondences. I also enjoy the housewares area and one of my favorite things is to look for candles as i have found many new or nearly new at a fraction of the original cost. We burn candles nightly, so finding something that can be used and then is gone is very good.

  16. That mug would have come home with me too. Blue - check; heavy - check; pottery - check; AND coloured inside - check. Definitely all the boxes!
Thrift store path for me depends on which thriftie I'm at. Usually I check the dishes just for fun (don't need a single thing); and then I scan the clothing to see if there's anything I can't live without; then purses just in case there's a great one in my price range.

  17. Beatrice,
Candles are something I don't see that often at the local thrift stores. The stationary section at one thrift, often has a lot of nice papers.
    Have a nice weekend!

  18. What a cute mug you found at the thrift store. I love the blue. It looks like a sturdy one too. It's so good of you to donate some of your stuff to the thrift store also. : )

  19. Sheri,
Despite the wide opening, the coffee stayed warm well into the half cup stage.
