The Color of Gardening

Orange Pansies 2024

Each year, the seasonal decisions begin haunting my thoughts a few months before the answers are needed. The color theme of my small garden, planters mostly, is an issue that has become as much fun as the gardening itself.

Over the years, orange is the accent color I love the most. In the right light, that warm hue can nearly glow, brightening up the other flowers even more. The second accent is blue. Bachelor's Buttons aka cornflower and lobelia are my favorites. This year I'll be adding delphinium, blue poppy and/or balloon flowers.   With that combination, any other colors will turn the planters into wildflower bouquets.

One year I tried a red, white and blue theme. The white flowers didn't do well. The red geraniums did do well. The heat waves sapped a lot of life out of the lobelia. Choosing plants that don't need a lot of tender care works for me.

Do you plant using a color theme?

  1. No longer plant ~ except for deck planters with usually Red Geraniums and vinca vine ~ Mother Nature does the rest of the property ~ living facing the harbor ~ need hardy plants to survive the wind and rains ~ hugs,

  3. I usually do purples and reds. This year am doing more marigolds cause I heard snakes hate the smell. Having a juvenile rattlesnake in our yard last Fall has really put me on edge. Never have I encountered a poisonous snake before. Janice

That's awful to have a poisonous snake living nearby! Stay Safe!

  4. We never used to worry too much about colours in our garden. RC would plant things wherever there was a hole that needed filling, no matter what the colours.

      RC has style!
Wherever there's a hold is somehow refreshing to think gardening being that easy.

  5. I love blue and white in the garden. A spot of color from nasturtiums is lovely, too. But I can't manage without white.

I caved this year, and bought a hanging plant, small yellow petunia, and a white one that might be a petunia. The are both heavy
bloomers. They cascade better than most hanging plants from past years.

  7. I usually plant purples, pinks, and blues with lots of white. The orange pansies would look striking combined with anything blue. Have a good weekend.

The blue and orange of cornflowers and orange cosmos look beautiful together.
I think they can anchor a garden well.
A good weekend to you as well

  10. Nope! I don't even plant. It's just whatever grows where it was before. (Can you tell -- I'm no gardener.) Anything that matters goes in pots!

  11. Oh, I love the color orange, and what a pretty color for your garden this year. You know, I read one time that orange is the happiest color.....I believe that is true. You have a new blog design, very cool.

    Happy Memorial Day, my friend.

Those orange pansies are also scented, mild sweet spicey scent.
Orange comos are nice as they glow in the sunset light. I've looked everywhere for the seeds. I guess I'll order some online.

  12. No more planting for me as we no longer have a home and yard, but in days gone by, I never had a theme, but just planted as many colorful blooms as possible. Most of these were annuals, which meant repeating the process the following year. The only seasonal decorating I do now, without plants, is the entry to our apt which this week was changed from spring to summer.

    1. Beatrice,
Container gardening can be as rewarding as in the ground. It can also be as difficult.
I have to remember to have containers that can last outdoors in the winter. Most plastic planters will
      crack in the cold.
