Pumpkin Hunting

Slowed down by age, a seasonal allergy and a lousy attitude, this year I decided to not have a pumpkin hunt to find a roadside stand in the countryside to buy a pumpkin.
Instead, early on, I bought two pie pumpkins at the Middlebury Agway Farm & Garden (where I also buy every year). The garden center has a country store vibe.

I bake the pie pumpkins. It is more off a treat to me than pumpkin cheesecake or a pumpkin spice latte.

The foliage at this lower Champlain Valley elevation is near peak. The trees I can see out my window are in various stages of turning to their fall colors.

There is time for me to change my mind to buy a roadside stand pumpkin. Things of autumn aren't all done with for the season. I suspect with ambient temperatures in the 70sºF, there will be folks out and about enjoying the beautiful sunshine here in New England this week (where available). I plan a sit out and read with a light lunch outdoors.
There are still a lot of leaves that will be falling.

Is your autumn all about foliage and pumpkins?

  2. I buy a small sugar pumpkin each year and keep it on the step till the squirrels taste it, then cook it and freeze for future plans when I decide on them.

    1. Liz,
There’s a raccoon showing up here this year. Looks prego. I’m sure it would carry off my pie pumpkins. One year mice nibbled the pumpkin.

  3. Sitting outside and reading in the sunshine with a light lunch sounds like a great way to spend a golden autumn day. The leaves are dropping madly these days and pumpkins are everywhere.

  4. It used to be, but recently we have not put up any cornstalks or pumpkins. Frankly, I miss it. It is my favorite time of the year!

As much corn grown around here, I haven’t found a good prices on corn stalks. I will keep looking.

  5. Is that frost on your pumpkin? My two pumpkins are still going strong on my front porch, but I noticed the other day they are starting to wither a bit. No, it's still not too late to get yourself a nice round orange pumpkin. We still have November, and it will go nicely at your home.

    Have a wonderful October week.

  6. Our fall season has been extended because the weather remains in the 60's and 70's. Bet that pumpkin tastes wonderful. I didn't buy a pumpkin this year...but we are going to the cider press this weekend and going to get a gallon to enjoy. It is one of my favorite fall things. Take care and have a delightful weekend. Hugs!

    1. Debbie,
It should be apple butter churning time in Ohio, if I remember right. It was a treat to see the big cauldrons out at church yards.
      Enjoy your weekend!
