Slimming Down Stuff

The arrival of a new year plops us in the middle of a summing up pool that ripples us along in a carnival ride of memories. What will 2026 be like?

Researching weather forecasts, how Earth behaves is a solid start for the process of summing up where we are in life in general.

Clutter surrounds me like scattered birdseed. Thus, I am reading about decluttering to build declutter confidence. I already accept the biggest issue is my fault. I have allowed my stuff to outgrow my space. Stuff must go.

Even my mug shelf is taking over the shelf above it. My focus now is on what I use and what I wear.  All keeping just in case will be for the donation box. Only very sentimental things can be kept.

The days getting longer will be noticed by the time January ends. The birds and I will go on as usual. Only for me, instead of slim by pounds before Valentine’s Day, I’ll be slimmer of stuff.

  1. How many mugs does one need? We suffer from the same thing and fight the urge to buy mugs or shot glasses everywhere we go.

Well, there's the seasonal mugs, holiday mugs, vacation mugs, in a mood mugs, gifted mugs, and must have mugs. I found that Pfaltzgraff mugs have the best shape, design and thickness of all more than a dozen mugs I have.

  3. It's good you are de-cluttering, and letting go of stuff you no longer want or need. I am doing the same in the new year. It's a freeing feeling, isn't it? Only keeping the things that I truly love and have some meaning to me. It's a process, but so worth it. I hope the new year is being gentle and kind to you so far.

  4. I always get in the decluttering mood in January. It must be something about a new year and wanting to freshen up and allow room to breathe. Stuff can so often weigh us down and what a relief when we can sort, toss and give away those things that we no longer need nor want. Hugs!

  5. Starting a new year with this mindset is a good thing. I think I need to tackle my closet (again). And my craft stuff (again). These two areas are where I struggle with "too much".

  6. It's good to simplify our possessions and get rid of things we no longer need or use. I have far too much fabric for sewing projects and am determined to use as much of it as I can this year.
Good luck on decluttering. Happy New Year!

  7. About decluttering - I love reading (and re-reading) anything by A Slob Comes Clean (Dana K. White). She has the most common-sense approach I've ever found (and I've read a LOT of books about clutter). You might want to have a peek at her web site/blog or if you're really interested see if you can find a copy of 'Decluttering At the Speed of Life'. I have borrowed it multiple times from the library and just a few weeks ago I benefited from someone else in our building decluttering and there was a copy sitting on our laundry room bookshelf. I snagged it in a hurry and it's on my reading list to re-read when I get time.
